Actes d ’ IDP 09 223 Discourse ‘ Major Continuatives ’ in a Non - Monotonic Framework
نویسنده
چکیده
Delattre (1966) proposed a classification of French basic melodic contours. He defined in particular ‘major continuatives’ as melodic rises that mark the frontier between higher constituents in a hierarchy of clausal and sentential constituents. Although Delattre’s empirical basis for his classification has been discussed, there is a strong intuition that some sort of melodic rise can be used in French at the frontier between discourse constituents. The go al of this paper is to explore this possibility in two directions. First, we provide experimental evidence that, taken in isolation, major continuatives are not significantly discriminated from interrogative contours by ‘naïve’ subjects, having no training in phonetics. Second, we try to account for the fact that, in real discourse, people do not confuse major continuatives and interrogative contours, by controlling the interactions between interpretation constraints using a non-monotonic logic in the general framework of Answer Set Programming.

متن کاملThe Semantics of French Continuative Rises in SDRT
In this paper, we examine the status of French major continuative prosodic contours, which are mainly realised as final rises at the boundary of sentences. We show how to substantiate the common intuition that these contours convey ‘continuation’. We report empirical evidence that indicates that native speakers cannot distinguish major continuatives and questions in isolated discourse segments....

This article addresses the controversial issue of the prosodic marking of Information Focus in French. We report the results of three experiments (one in production two in perception) that support three claims. The first one is empirical. Phrases that resolve a question may be set off by two types of intonational marks in French: they host the nuclear pitch accent (NPA) on their right edge and/...
متن کاملRecognizing Text Plans
Traditional plan recognition systems try to recognize a user's domain plan from the user's queries. In contrast, the Interactive Discourse Planner (IDP) tries to recognize an expansion of its own text plan from the user's queries. During interaction, IDP builds a text plan in reaction to user feedback that it uses as the discourse context. IDP uses this text plan to analyze user questions for i...
